Wristwatches are not only practical time-tools but also symbols of artistry and prestige. Three-hand watches indicating the hour, minute and second are a sensible and smart accessory that can be useful anytime, anywhere. Wristwatches can be split into several style, colour, construction, user and price segments.

In today’s age, we organise our lives and often follow time to the minute. And down to the second when it comes to, say, documenting online transactions or setting records in sports. A couple of years back, the shortest timespan, a zeptosecond, was identified by scientists. In fact, an entire science known as Horology focuses on the measurement of time as well as the craftsmanship and design of timepieces.

The story of timekeeping

In the past, human societies in various parts of the world took help from the sun and stars to create sundials and water clocks that kept track of time. Sundials used shadows cast by the sun and water clocks used the flow of water to measure time. Mechanical clocks, albeit with large dimensions and less than perfect accuracy, originated over a thousand years ago. Better precision was built into pendulum clocks that followed, which eventually led to the creation of a small, practical, accessible and wearable timekeeping device- the wristwatch.

Parts of a wristwatch

A single wristwatch may be created using over hundreds of parts. The main outer and inner parts are outlined as follows-

The main part or foundation of a wristwatch is its outer case.. It defines the shape and protects the insides of the watch. Commonly seen shapes are round and square. The dial is the face of the watch which shows the markings of hours, minutes and seconds. The hands move to tell the time. A dial can be simple or creative and is covered by a transparent top known as crystal. The crystal in turn is secured on top by a ring-shaped frame called bezel.

The crown is a small knob usually seen at the 3 o’clock position. It helps chiefly with adjusting the time hands. Lugs or watch horns at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock hold the watchband in place.

Watchbands are straps in non-metal or as metal links. The latter are referred to as bracelets. Straps or bracelets hold the case to the wrist.

How does a watch tell you the time? With the movement or caliber. It determines the inner working mechanism which is reflected in the basic value and durability of the watch.

Movement can be Mechanical or Quartz. Mechanical requires manual or automatic winding of the watch. For automatic winding, the watch needs to be worn frequently. Battery operated watches which do not require winding or wearing for longer durations, fall under Quartz movement. Needless to say, the Quartz movement is popular for its convenience.

Supplementary functions of a watch may include, amongst others, day and date display.

When it comes to movement, while both are known for precision, Swiss movement focusses on detailed craftsmanship while Japanese movement is known for affordable functionality, implying low cost and high quality. These famous Swiss or Japanese movements can be a part of high-end as well as wallet-friendly timepieces. Generally, hand-assembled Swiss watches are expensive while Japanese assembly-line watches are affordable.

Accuracy and reliability have been the top considerations while buying a wristwatch. Add  appearance, construction and durability. A sturdy watch goes a long way, recording one’s routine with consistency. On this note, let’s dive into the details of the new Men’s and Unisex wristwatch collection from Safe Shop.

As life gets faster-paced and daily activities like work, leisure, workouts and even sleep are slotted into rigid time brackets, one can end up obsessing about ‘productive’ time. While time and tide wait for none and timepieces help with streamlining the practical aspects of life, it’s equally important to ‘lose track of time’ with life’s simple yet priceless pleasures such as spending time with children or following one’s hobby.
